The BARE ESSENTIALS was created for those who have demanding work schedules, but are still committed to serious professional actor training. If you are willing to commit the time and energy available to you from week to week, MFS is dedicated to helping you move toward your goal of becoming a well-trained actor.

It consists of the minimum commitment needed in order to be considered seriously well-trained. It requires a dedication to acting technique, and the flexibility to commit to two essential auxiliary classes throughout the school year. Students who select this option can expect to be in the studio 6-10 hours a week.

The current First Year BARE ESSENTIALS includes ACTING 1, and a choice of two of the following classes: VOICE 1, VOICE 2, MOVEMENT 1, MOVEMENT 2, BREATHWORK FOR ACTORS.

The current Second Year BARE ESSENTIALS includes ACTING 2, and a choice of two of the following classes: MOVEMENT 3, MOVEMENT 4, VOICE 3, VOICE 4, CHEKHOV TECHNIQUE.

Any additional workshops or classes offered throughout the school year can be added to your schedule at any time. The cost of additional auxiliary classes will be added to your overall tuition balance.

The heart of the two-year conservatory program is the Meisner Technique, taught by Artistic Director & Master Teacher Charlie Sandlan. You will receive the full progression of Meisner training while also developing your physical and vocal instrument.

If you want to be able to take on major roles, you will need to be grounded in the fundamentals, and confident in your artistic process. Breaking into professional acting is not easy, and it can feel overwhelming without the right guidance. Most actors are lazy. They do not view acting as an art form, and are merely drawn to the pop-culture superficiality of fame and celebrity. The Maggie Flanigan Studio works with those that truly want to be acrobats of the human heart. Our classrooms are filled with students that see acting as an art form, and have a willingness to put in the hard work.

The BARE ESSENTIALS will provide you with a solid foundation, anchored with an inviolate sense of truth. You will enter the professional world with craft, work-ethic, and the skills needed to collaborate with others.

Our students are interested in more than extra work, day players, and under-fives. We prepare our actors for lead parts, series regulars, guest stars, and recurring roles. If you work hard, and don’t quit, at some point you will be presented with an opportunity to audition for work at this level. You want to know that when those times come, you have a process for breathing life into those pages of dialogue.

CHARLIE SANDLAN

Charlie’s unique relationship with Maggie Flanigan began over twenty-five years ago. He received his MFA in acting from Rutgers University, Mason Gross School Of The Arts where Maggie and Bill Esper trained him in the Meisner Technique. Over the past 30 years Charlie has also studied and collaborated with many artists including Ben Kingsley, Fiona Shaw, Mark Wing-Davey, and Ellen Stewart.
