The Economist Turned Actor – Emily Dodson Interview
Q: Emily, what did you think it meant to train as an actor before you started the acting programs at Maggie Flanigan Studio?
A: I would say what I thought it meant to train as an actor was, someone would give you a script and tell you, “Okay, go and read this script as a character.” I honestly, I don’t even know what I thought it meant. I was, “This is not what I thought it was at all.”
Q: Well, now that you finished the first year of the acting program, what do you think it means to train as an actor?
A: I think training as an actor now means working on your craft, and learning that acting is an art, and it is something that you have to work at consistently. It’s something that’s always changing and something that you can still do better at. I think that’s what it is for me, really working on your craft and learning how to make something personal to you.
Q: Can you talk a little bit about your background in acting?
A: I have an economics degree — nothing to do with acting at all. I went to Pace University and got a BA in economics. While I was there, I had some free electives. Pace is a great performing arts program, 4and I took an acting class there with the head of the program. It was a fantastic class; it was my favorite class by far that I took in college at all. I was the only one that I was willing to get up at 9:00 AM to go to. After taking that class, I graduated immediately after that, and I was like, “You know what, I don’t want to be an economist. I don’t care what rich people do with their money.”
I was like, “I’m going to be an actor. I’m just going to do it.’ I went and looked at different studios, and I studied a few different places, and I couldn’t get the feeling that I got when I was in that first class. I was like, “You know what, I’ve been doing this for a year, and I still don’t know how to act. I don’t know how to read a script. I don’t know anything. Why I’ve been doing this for a year, and I know nothing?” That’s when I found Maggie, and I was like, I wanted to go to a conservatory, and I googled New York City conservatories.
I was googling this while I was waiting to go and do another class at a place that I learned nothing at, in the lobby. Maggie didn’t immediately come up. I found Maggie while reading an article about acting conservatories in New York, and Maggie came up on the list. Then I googled Maggie Flanigan Studio and then literally on the website it says precisely what I wanted, like, “Are you tired of taking a hodgepodge of classes and still don’t know how to act?” and I’m like, “Wow, this is so right.” Then I set up an interview with Charlie the next day. That’s how I found Maggie.
Q: Is this your first time studying the Meisner technique?
A: This is my first time studying the Meisner technique. I didn’t even know Meisner existed before this.
