STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

“I was placed in the intense reigns of Charlie Sandlan.  I became a better artist, actor, friend, sibling and daughter because of the studio. Even now, I crave the studio every day. What I learned is present in my work every day. I truly believe in everything they stand for.”

Maggie taught me that I could control my work, my acting, and to throw all of the bullshit out that I had in my head about ‘what I should be doing’ and to just listen and respond honestly, in the moment. She gave me a craft. She is, quite simply put, THE BEST.”

Maggie Flanigan taught me the true meaning of artistry, passion, and professionalism. I am certain that I continue to work as an actress because of my training with Maggie. At every audition and every performance, her guiding voice is with me. It is a gift beyond measure.”

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

The heart of performance is the actor. The actor is the most essential‬ element in the equation that makes up this phenomenon of performance. The heart of‬‭ the actor is the breath. In and out. Like waves in the ocean, it comes and it goes. It is‬‭ gentle and at the same time dangerous and powerful. It’s always there and it cannot be‬ dismissed. It knows where it wants to go and yet has no problem changing direction. It‬ gives and receives and is‬‭ changed‬‭. This idea radiates‬‭ out through the whole body of the‬ actor and then, of course, through the character and the world of the play. An actor‬‭ should have this flexibility of “state” which could be called the beginning of technique.‭ Breath goes to physical state which leads to psychology and emotion. This formula‬ equals presence, and presence equals truth. Then, of course, it travels all the way back to the seed of the breath. This process then‬ repeats itself again, over and over, moment to moment, as the actor - who is‬ experienced by the audience as a character - winds themself through the journey of the‬ story. Ultimately, the creative craft of acting is the action of the conversation itself – alive and in "the room", human being with human being.
