Martha Graham, the mother of modern dance has a famous quote, “Technique will set you free.” Talent in and of itself doesn’t mean anything if it does not have a form for it to go into. Many actors have moments in their work that feel magical, those times when they felt fully present, fully alive, and had lived through something real in the imaginary world. For the untrained actor, those moments are fleeting and mysterious. They don’t know how it happened or why, but they long for it to happen again. An actor without craft lacks the skill set and process to make those moments a consistent part of their acting. This is what technique provides, a way of working that frees your instincts and allows your talent to soar to the surface.
The CORE PROGRAM consists of the three pillars of serious acting training. A dedication to acting technique, and the rigorous development of the actor’s vocal and physical instrument. Students who select this option can expect to be in the studio 14-18 hours a week.
The current First Year CORE PROGRAM includes ACTING 1, VOICE 1, VOICE 2, MOVEMENT 1, MOVEMENT 2, THEATER HISTORY, BREATHWORK FOR ACTORS.
The current Second Year CORE PROGRAM includes ACTING 2, MOVEMENT 3, MOVEMENT 4, VOICE 3, VOICE 4, SCRIPT ANALYSIS, CHEKHOV TECHNIQUE.
Any additional workshops or classes offered throughout the school year can be added to your schedule at any time. The cost of additional auxiliary classes will be added to your overall tuition balance.
Hopefully, if you are serious, you will look into the many acting classes NYC has to offer. The mistake that many aspiring actors make is in cobbling together over many years a hodge-podge of on-camera, monologue, and scene study classes. After spending thousands of dollars, they come to realize that they still lack craft. When they are presented with a script, they do not have a legitimate artistic process that allows them to break it down and create vivid human behavior.
The Maggie Flanigan Studio believes that talent is no more than the ability to do good work consistently. This doesn’t happen by chance. It is rooted in what it means to be an artist. What separates the successful actor from those that quit the business after a few years is more than just a love of acting. It requires much more than that.
The successful are the hardest working, those with insatiable intellectual curiosity, and a deep commitment to artistry. The CORE PROGRAM provides our students with the ability to grind out survival in NYC while also laying the foundation for a long and sustained professional acting career.
Why Choose MFS?
The heart of our two-year NYC acting school lies in the full progression of the Meisner Technique. Our reputation as the clearest and most accurate Meisner program in the country was forged by Maggie Flanigan when she made the decision to open a boutique acting school in 2001. Led now by Artistic Director & Master Teacher Charlie Sandlan, MFS has become the gold standard in NYC acting training.
Maggie believed in the value of a boutique acting school with the highest artistic standard, small class sizes, and consistent individual attention and mentoring. MFS is not a factory school that accepts hundreds of students, throwing you into classrooms with incompetent teachers. You are not a number with us. If you show up with a commitment to yourself and your artistic dream, then we are 100% committed to helping you become the actor you long to be.
It’s a very challenging path when you make the decision to pursue a professional artistic career. No one will take you seriously if you do not take yourself seriously first. A commitment to serious training with the CORE PROGRAM will provide you with necessary skills to compete at the highest levels of the industry. You will be going up against the best trained actors in the country, those that have come out of the top MFA programs and acting studios in the United States. Actors who have craft and technique and know what to do with a script. You want to make sure that you have the confidence and ability to compete with these artists.
The Core Program Difference
The CORE PROGRAM makes it possible for students who have challenging work schedules to be able to get the professional acting training they need while still living and working in NYC. Day and night time classes provide the flexibility needed for students to create the schedule that works for them. is
By the end of the program, you will be a fundamentally sound actor, with a well developed body, a resonant and versatile voice, and a solid process for creating vivid, organic, fully realized human behavior. You will enter the professional world confident in your ability, and capable of working on stage, television, and film.
