The Maggie Flanigan Studio believes that any serious artist masters their instrument. This is true for the dancer, the painter, the musician, and anyone pursuing a committed, professional, creative life. A majority of the acting classes NYC has to offer do not approach actor training from this belief. Most NYC acting programs only scratch the surface when it comes to instilling in an actor the craft and technique needed to sustain a long and productive artistic career. The Professional Actor Training Program (PATP) is our two-year, MFA-level conservatory program and includes every class offered at the Maggie Flanigan Studio. It is our most comprehensive training, and students enrolled in the PATP can expect to be in the studio between 22-28 hours a week.

For the actor, your instrument of expression is the totality of you and your humanity. If you want to have the capacity to take on major roles, to step into the shoes of rich, complicated characters, you will need a well-developed voice & body, a vivid imagination, emotional fluidity, and a rock solid technique.

We believe that a reputable acting school should be dedicated to providing the rigorous and demanding training needed to accomplish this. The PATP is not for the hobbyist, or for those aspiring to three lines on Law & Order. The full conservatory program has been created for those that want to take on the similar demands and high expectations of the top MFA programs in the United States.

Professional Training for Serious Actors

The Professional Actor Training Program (PATP) is for actors who are ready to commit fully to their craft. It has been designed for those who know that becoming a professional actor takes much more than talent.

The current First Year PATP includes ACTING 1, VOICE 1, VOICE 2, MOVEMENT 1, MOVEMENT 2, THEATER HISTORY, BREATHWORK FOR ACTORS, MASK & CHARACTER, ARTIST SELF-CARE, DIALECTS 1

The current Second Year PATP includes ACTING 2, MOVEMENT 3, MOVEMENT 4, VOICE 3, VOICE 4, SCRIPT ANALYSIS, CREATING CHARACTER, CHEKHOV, COLD READING, DIALECTS 2, and  INTRO TO CLOWN.

The studio is continually looking for ways to enhance our student experience, so throughout the school year you can expect additional classes and workshops to be offered, dependent on guest teacher and artist availability.

Every aspect of the PATP is continually curated by Artistic Director & Master Teacher Charlie Sandlan. His vision has been shaped by the unwavering standards set by Maggie Flanigan when she opened MFS in 2001. The Meisner Technique is the soul of the two-year program, and Charlie’s dedication to the clarity and accuracy of Sandy’s brilliant training method is why MFS has the reputation as one of the finest acting schools in the country.

What Sets Maggie Flanigan Studio Apart?

There are thousands of acting teachers scattered throughout the country, from college universities to acting programs in cities like NY and LA. Most of these teachers are pulling out notes from classes they took ten years ago, and then trying to cobble together a hodge-podge of nonsense, passing it off as serious acting training.

We believe that teaching is an art form. We also believe strongly that the best teachers have spent years mentoring under a master of their chosen discipline, and have dedicated their life to the art of shaping aspiring artists. Our teachers are masters of their chosen field, and have been personally selected by Charlie because of their high standards, unwavering work-ethic, and passion for the struggle of creativity.

MFS is an artistic home, and everything from the design of the studio to the art on the walls has been curated so our students actually want to spend their time together in a place that feeds and nourishes their artistic soul. If you are interested in being surrounded by classmates who are dedicated, passionate, and committed to their art, then MFS can be that source of community you have been looking for.

We are not a factory studio, we do not have hundreds of students, and you are not just a number here, thrown into a class with a teacher who doesn't know what they’re doing. We are a small, boutique studio with small class sizes, led by teachers who are dedicated to your individual artistic growth.

We also promise that when you apply to MFS, you will actually interview with Artistic Director & Master Teacher Charlie Sandlan. You will not be meeting with a studio manager or admissions staff member. Every student at MFS has been accepted by Charlie personally, and it's his commitment to bringing into the studio only those who we believe add to the diverse tapestry of our community, that sets MFS apart from every other acting program NYC has to offer.
