Maggie and Charlie believe deeply that any serious artist masters their instrument. The Maggie Flanigan Studio considers a strong, resonant voice, a pliable body capable of processing experience, a temperament channeled through solid craft, and rigorous intellectual curiosity to be the core essentials needed to sustain a professional acting career. Our Core Program reflects this belief. Core Program classes in our two-professional training program include Acting 1, Acting 2, Voice 1, Voice 2, Voice 3, Voice 4, Movement 1, Movement 2, Movement 3, Movement 4, Theater History, Script Analysis, Business Preparation Workshops, and Business 1. Our students arrive with various schedule and financial demands. For anyone unsure about taking on the PATP, the Core Program option provides the heart of the studio conservatory while leaving the ability to add additional classes over the two years of training. Class costs are added up and divided over 24 months allowing for very manageable monthly payments. Core Program students can receive a $300 discount towards their overall balance when paying in full upon acceptance. Also, along with our PATP students, Core Program participants get priority in enrollment and class time selection. Students participating in the Core program can expect to be in class 14-18 hours a week.

Core Acting Program: Year 1

Year 1 of the Core Program begins with Acting 1, Voice 1, Voice 2, Movement 1 and Movement 2. What makes an actor a virtuoso of the art form is the ability to create vivid, nuanced, deeply rich human behavior. The physical and vocal dexterity needed to take on complicated parts gets developed in the Core Program. Theater History is included as part of the Core Program because we believe that serious actors should understand the art form they wish to pursue. The best artists are inspired and challenged by what has come before them. We want our students to have the ability to contribute something interesting in any collaborative setting, whether in the audition room, rehearsal, on set, or any social professional event.

Core Acting Program: Year 2

Year 2 of the Core Program continues with Acting 2, Voice 3, Voice 4, Movement 3, and Movement 4. The work in the second year becomes more challenging, as students work on dialects, classical text, and the challenge of physical collaboration and creativity with the Movement 4 performance project. Students in the Core Program develop the ease, simplicity, and clarity of behavior needed to be a versatile actor. Script Analysis is also included in our Core Program, a skill we consider essential to an actor’s ability to read and interpret the material. Our students who take both Theater History and Script Analysis make the biggest strides and do the most interesting work at the studio because of the skills they acquire.

The second year of the Meisner Technique deals with script interpretation, and how to make creative choices based on intuition and insight. These core classes are a major reason why the Maggie Flanigan Studio has the reputation of graduating incredibly well trained, and professionally ready actors. The Business Preparation Workshops, and Business 1 finishes off the Core Program, educating you on all aspects of the industry, from how to do your taxes, and understanding social media, to choosing headshot photographers and auditioning for agents and casting directors. This option still gives you the chance to work with Kate Lacey, the head of our professional business program who has created the most comprehensive introduction to the business in the United States. It is the payoff of the training and sets our students up with business knowledge that most actors in this country do not possess.

The goal of the Core Program is to provide you with what we believe is the basic skill set to pursue a serious professional acting career. This option is great for students who have scheduling or financial concerns about the PATP but want the ability to add more classes if and when possible.
