The heart of our Summer Acting Program (Conservatory) is the Six-Week Meisner Summer Intensive. Beginning in early June and running through the end of July, interested and curious students are introduced to the first third of the Acting 1 Meisner Technique, while experiencing in six weeks the rigors of serious professional actor training. The Summer Conservatory includes Voice 1, Movement 1, and the choice of at least one of the following auxiliary classes: On Camera, Commercial 1, Mask & Character, Playwriting, Nutrition, and Self-Care For Actors. Summer Conservatory students often choose more than one auxiliary class and receive priority in enrollment, and the selecting of class times. Students can expect to be in class 15-26 hours a week depending on their class load. The majority of our summer students are currently pursuing their BA or BFA in universities around the country, international actors who want an intense introduction to Meisner training, or actors living in NYC and LA who want to get a sense of the studio and the Meisner Technique before committing to the entire two-year training program. Students cannot learn the craft of acting in six weeks, but our Meisner summer intensive will wake you up to the art form, the importance of artistry and hard work, and a new understanding of the important fundamentals that any serious actor should possess.

For those looking for an intense, fully immersive summer acting program, our Summer Conservatory is the best option. You are guaranteed to come away with a new appreciation of the craft of acting, a deep experience cultivating your physical and vocal instrument, and a significantly clearer process on how to write and shape your own work, auditioning on camera, the power of masks, and the ways an actor can protect and care for their body.

For students currently attending college, this work will pay huge dividends when returning back to school in the fall, as your auditions, class work, and performance quality will see positive changes. Enrolling in the Two Year Acting Program

Many Summer Conservatory students make the decision to enroll in our Two-Year Professional Actor Training Program. After spending the summer with us, and discovering the brilliance of Sanford Meisner’s technique, they find it hard to walk away from what was accomplished in just six weeks. The great advantage these students have is the opportunity to repeat the first third of the Meisner Technique in Acting 1. Having navigated the early fears and frustrations that come with learning something new, summer students approach the fall semester without those issues and are often the leaders of their class. Also, having completed Movement 1 and Voice 1 in the summer has allowed their vulnerability and sensitivity to operate with greater ease. They start First Year in Movement 2 and Voice 2. Their ability to physically and vocally process the deep experiences that come in Acting 1, make it possible to create vivid and interesting human behavior, their talent flourishing as craft continues to solidify within them. The Six-Week Summer Intensive is certainly not a requirement to begin our two-year conservatory program, but those that have seen some of the most profound growth.

Summer Conservatory students who continue on into First Year have their registration fee waived, and get priority in selecting fall class times. Summer students who cannot immediately continue into the two-year program because they need to finish their undergraduate degree, or need time to make the big move to NYC, will not need to reapply. Summer students have a standing acceptance into the Maggie Flanigan Studio when they are ready. Maggie and Charlie consider the studio to be an artistic home for all of our students.
