Placement of Concentration
The 18 month actor training program with the Maggie Flanigan Studio is a professional acting program based on the Meisner technique. In this video Charlie Sandlan, the executive director and head of acting at the studio, discusses how actors can act with more freedom by focusing on the placement of their concentration.
One of the first things that we address in chapter one, right off the bat, and it is a fundamental backing, it is the placement of your concentration. Most actors that they’re all trained, their attention is on themselves and this is very much a very human thing. We’re worried about what people think of us, we’re worried about how we sound, we’re worried about how we look and it keeps us in life, withholding what we say, editing ourselves, judging ourselves.
The first key to your freedom and actor is to get the attention off of yourself. In acting, you want to be able to have your placement of concentration either on the other person or what you’re doing. In the first chapter, we’re going to get you very good at making the other person more important than you and teaching you how to really truthfully do, how to get your attention off of yourself and onto what you’re doing.
